Part of being a professional carpet cleaner is being a salesman. Not only do you need to be able to clean well, but you should be able to effectively communicate your other services. Each cleaning technician can only do so much work in a given year. However, a technician can increase their sales dollars by improving their salesmanship.
In the cleaning business ourselves, we know we don’t want to hard sell customers. Not only do customers not like the high pressure sales tactics, but we feel uncomfortable pushing sales on a customer as well. Proper balance is needed. The secret is to communicate all add-on services, but only discuss the services individualized to the customer’s needs. An example of overall communication would be to have a brochure that discusses everything you do. It is amazing how many businesses offer extra services, but the customer doesn’t know that the company offers it. An example of individualized discussion of services would be to point out a few of the services on the brochure to the customer that are relevant to his/her needs (ie. Pointing out enzyme treatment to a pet owner, pointing out air duct cleaning to a home with nasty looking vents, pointing out dry cleaning to a home that has dirty & dingy drapery, etc.). Even if a cleaning technician sold one extra service a week, it could add up to thousands of extra dollars a year in revenue.
